Getting ready for Fiber Arts Festival in Charlevoix

July 23rd, 2009

I took off a 32 inch mohair shawl this morning and have finished labeling. I’m toying with the idea of putting on a couple rugs – there is truly no rest for wicked people! Here’s a peek of my mound of mohair – all hand painted by yours truly -

Mary, are they mohair in both warp & weft? I’ve heard that working with mohair is hard–that the fibers all stick together & it’s hard to get a good shed–so I thought it might be easier if the warp were something else. Those shawls are absolutely gorgeous!

i uze mohair both warp and weft. i find that if it’s a long and wide warp that the boucle mohair is easier to work with than the brushed mohair. the only loom i like to do brushed mohair as my warp is my little dorset with a 6 yard warp. i haven’t figured out if it it’s the direct tie up that makes it successful … but they do weave nicely on that small loom! I will use brushed mohair as weft any day any loom, but not was warp unless it’s a smaller warp and not wide. If you read older posts (and there are a few) of my experience with mohair you’ll see the frustration i have had with brushed mohair. Two months ago i wrote it off completely as a warp, but am doing it again but only on the small loom! moral of the story: never say never!!

Just beautiful! I bet you’ll be empty handed coming home. I love weaving with mohair, after I get over swearing at it while I’m warping it. :-)
